Resin Ocean Boards & Coasters
Thanks for coming along to the workshop, we hope you left inspired ready to create with Resin. In case you forgot a thing or two, below is everything you need to know.
Items used for Ocean Boards & Coasters:
U Resin Liquid Glass
U RESIN Liquid Glass is a simple 1:1 ratio by volume. U RESIN Liquid Glass has a very low viscosity and excellent bubble dispersion
With a working time of 60 minutes (based on 150ml @ 22 degrees Celsius)
What’s even better is that they are a Perth based business with excellent service!
You can use other brands i.e. Just Resin (Melbourne based company) or Art Resin (American) BUT I find that U Resin has the easiest ratio mix to work with and their resin has the least bubbles
U RESIN has an art calculator online. You can enter the dimensions to get an estimate of how much resin you need.
Wooden Board & Coasters
Pigments (Powder or Paste form)
Spotlight or any Arts & Crafts store, even U RESIN has a range of pigments suited to resin
GLOVES!
Resin is extremely sticky! You DO NOT want any resin to get stuck on your skin. I had resin burns before and it is pretty horrible!
Plastic cups and kitchen scale or calibrated measuring cups.
U Resin sells calibrated measuring cups or you can use a kitchen scale to measure your volumes. However, remember to change the unit of measurements to ml instead of g!
Popsticks
Painters Tape
Plastic table cloth to protect your surfaces!
Once resin is cured, there’s no chance for you to remove the stained part. (Speaking from experience!)
Alcohol wipes or disinfectant wipe
In case your resin falls somewhere you don’t want it, a quick wipe as soon as it happens will make sure it doesn’t stick around
Heat gun
If you’re on a budget, you can use a blow torch (carefully!) to pop the bubbles and then a straw to create your waves
Tips & Method
There are many types of resin available. Be sure that you’re using a dispersible resin such as U RESIN Liquid Glass.
Take your time to prepare, do not rush. Prep the board and coasters with painters tape around the edges to avoid spill over and create a clean line on your finished product.
Make sure you are working in a well-ventilated room/area. A respirator is recommended when working in high volumes or poorly ventilated area.
Measure your resin according to the product instructions and make sure they are right! An extra 1ml in one of the parts can impact the resin curing.
Take your time to mix/stir the resin. You should take about 3mins (not faster) to prevent bubbles forming.
When mixing in your pigments, A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY! The pigments are highly concentrated and you’ll get “puddles” if you use too much.
When putting your resin on the board/coasters, make sure all colours are mixed and nearby as the resin will begin curing in about 40-50 mins making it harder to manipulate.
Use a heat gun (or blow torch) to pop any bubbles in the resin, then change the angle to blow your waves. Be cautious with the heat, a little goes a long way and overheating can cause issues with the curing.
Let it cure for at least 24hrs before you remove the tape and use your board.
Have fun creating!
