Meet our Pottery Guru - Megan
Say hello to the lovely Megan Brandis, a Perth based potter known for her stunning “swirly” pots.
Megan has always been creative, believing that art of any kind (especially ceramics) is one of the best therapies there is and that it has the power to open up whole new worlds or awaken something undiscovered in you; you just have to give it a go!
Previously focussing on large abstract paintings, Megan only discovered clay 4 years ago and hasn’t looked back, stating that “touching clay for the first time was amazing” and being able “to create something by hand brings (her) great joy”.
Inspired by the clay and what it can do, Megan loves to experiment and break the rules; mixing all different types of clay to create her original "swirly" pots. The beautiful mix of the clays results in an almost chaotic exterior, surrounding the calm, glazed interior of the pieces.
The glaze is yet another way that Megan loves to develop her piece. Due to the nature of glaze, it can react differently with various clays and firing processes allowing yet another avenue of experimentation for Megan.
While each piece is designed similarly, it’s never given a specific purpose, you get to choose - is it a vase , a mug , a trinket holder, a plant pot? Who knows, it’s up to you.
As with any handmade artwork, each one of Megan’s pieces is totally unique and the true reward is knowing that their organic designs bring joy to others.
In her spare time, Megan reads, gardens and showers her 2 dogs (and sometimes her husband) with love. Alongside her husband, she owns the Top Shot Indoor Shooting Range in Canning Vale - Australia’s first lead free range, often shooting some steel targets of her own. On occasion, she has incorporated the shooting range into her ceramics by using the spent copper from the bullets in her pieces.
