How to: Paint on Denim

Upcycling is a fun way to revamp something old, into something new and fun! It’s also a great way to repurpose and wear items you already have in your wardrobe. Today I’m going to show you how to use denim as a canvas and create a wearable work of art.

What you need:
- Your choice of canvas, I’m using a denim shirt for this project
- Acrylic paints
- Brushes
- Chalk
- Textile medium (Available from your local art supply store).
- Cardboard or really thick paper

How you do it:
Make sure your denim canvas is clean before you start, the paint will stick much better.

  1. Choose what you are going to paint on your canvas, draw a rough sketch of your plan on a piece of paper as a reference. The simpler the design, usually the more impact it will have. I’m doing a block colour still life, which features a few of my favourite things.

  2. Chalk your design onto your canvas, that way you can sponge it off later.

  3. Get your acrylic paints ready, in the colours of your choosing

  4. Mix your fabric medium with your acrylic paints, I used Josonja’s textile medium, the ratio was 2 parts paint to 1 part medium. Mix them well and get your brushes ready.

  5. BEFORE you start painting put some cardboard between the layers of your canvas. This is so when the paint leaks through it won’t ruin the other side of your item.

  6. Start painting the base layer in block shapes, sometimes this will take a few coats to make it really solid and bright. You can use a heat gun to speed up drying times.

  7. Once the base is dry, start adding extra details, like shading texture etc.

  8. Once you are happy with your design, let it fully dry. Follow the instructions of the textile medium for dry times and setting. Most textile mediums are washable too!

  9. Rock your one of a kind creation with confidence!

Hot tip - If you want a fully prepped surface do the base layer in white and build up with colour.

I hope this inspires you to give new life to something you no longer wear. We can’t wait to see what you create, please tag us on social media @hohperth or use #houseofhobby
