Pottery Aftercare
Congratulations on creating your very own ceramic piece! We loved having you at our workshop and hope you loved being there x
Now that your piece is completely finished and back with you, here are some quick tips to make sure you get the most out of your piece.
All pieces are microwave, dishwasher and oven safe!
The type of clay and glazes used have made your pieces completely safe for a variety of uses, however we do recommend you take extra care when washing them just to ensure they last as long as possible.Check the inside for cracks
If you are intending to use your piece for food and drink purposes, check over the inside and ensure there aren’t any cracks. If there is a crack, technically it’s not considered food safe anymore as food and drink particles can get stuck in the crack and develop bacteria. You can still eat and drink from your vessel, but just take extra care when washing it and, preferably, don’t let it sit around with food/drink in it for prolonged periods of time.
We love repurposing our cracked ceramics and use them for trinket trays, candle holders and decorative items.Check the bottom of your piece
There may be something known as kiln debris on the bottom of your piece which may cause it to wobble. Don’t worry, it’s easy to get rid of! Just grab a sheet of 360 grit sandpaper from Bunnings (they’re about $1.00 per sheet) and sand the base (make sure you WET your piece first to avoid dust particles flying around). We recommend doing this especially if you plan to place it on wooden furniture as it does have the potential to cause some scratches.Love and appreciate your piece
You did it! You created a piece and now it’s in your home forever! Remember all the time you put into it and all the laughs had along the way. Ceramics is an artform that can take decades to master and you’ve now got your very own completely original piece. Show it off any opportunity you get, you deserve it.
With all these tips, your piece should last years and be appreciated all the time!
Hopefully we’ll see you again soon, whether to create more ceramic pieces or try something completely new!
