Creativity on the Go!
Whether you’re planning a trip away or just hoping to fit more creativity into your schedule, arts and crafts that are mobile are always super helpful.
Here are our go-to travel friendly hobbies and everything you need to get started!
Watercolour
One of our absolute favourite mediums and it’s so easy to do on the go!
You’ll need:
- A watercolour sketchbook/sketchpad (the higher gsm the better as it’ll absorb the water better)
- A travel watercolour set (like this one here)
- 1-2 different brushes
- A cup for water (you can get collapsible ones that are great for travel and just fill it up with a water bottle)
Limiting the colours and brushes you have is an amazing way to test your creativity and make some interesting new worlds.
Inspiration can be found anywhere so having somewhere to put that inspiration down is an absolute must in our books.
Drawing
Probably the most versatile travel art, drawing or sketching can be done almost anywhere.
All you need is:
- A pencil or pen
- A sketchbook
- A sharpener
We haven’t included an eraser because the joy of drawing in public or while out and about is that you often have to complete the drawings quickly so there’s no point in worrying about little mistakes.
Drawing may seem a bit daunting but practice makes perfect so why not carry a sketchbook with you and practice as often as you can!
Art Journaling
If you’ve never tried art journaling, stop what you’re doing and give it a go as soon as possible!
To get started, all you need is:
- Pens and/or pencils
- A sketchbook
- Scrap papers
- Glue and/or tape
You can definitely add more tools as you go, stamps and washi tape can really help add something special to your spreads, but start with the basics especially if you’re planning to take it with you on a trip or just out into the world.
It’s super therapeutic to create a collaged spread and add in little thoughts, whether it’s like a diary entry, just some feelings or even just random quotes, being creative is about taking time for you and that’s exactly what art journaling is for.
Embroidery
Embroidery might be one of the most time consuming crafts out there but it is so insanely worth it because the results can be absolutely stunning! Since we don’t all have an abundance of free time in our day to day life, why not take it along with you on a trip or even just in your daily commute (train rides are the perfect time for crafting).
All you need
- An embroidery hoop
- Embroidery thread/floss
- A needle
- A pencil or piece of chalk for your design
Embroidery is such a diverse craft, you can add to clothes, create wall décor and even create your own patches, why not give it a go on your next road trip?
Punch Needling
We’re sure you’ve seen it doing the rounds on Pinterest lately, punch needling. It’s the newest craft craze used to create rugs and wall hangings all with a bobble-like texture that’s to die for but did you know that it’s super transportable?
All you need is:
- An embroidery hoop
- Fabric (monks cloth or similar)
- Yarn
- A punch needle
- A pencil or piece of chalk for your design
Punch needling is a rather repetitive motion but it’s insanely relaxing, plus if you’re anything like us and love a good texture, you’ll be obsessed with it in no time.
Knitting
Creativity is amazing and using that creativity to make something that’s both beautiful and useful is incredible. Knitting is all that and more, much like punch needling, the repetitive motions create a sense of relaxation that everyone needs a little bit more of at the moment.
All you need is:
- Yarn
- Knitting needles
With the least amount of materials, knitting is probably one of the easier portable crafts but depending on what you want to make, it can get quite big so keep this in mind when picking your pattern!
Film Photography
Travelling is the opportune time to take photos, you’re visiting new places and experiencing new things so why not capture them in the most relaxing way possible, on film.
All you need for this one is:
- A film or poleroid camera (either disposable or re-useable)
- Extra film if applicable
The beauty of a film camera is that you can’t instantly check exactly how the photo turned out so you’re forced to be more in the moment and enjoy your surroundings. Half the beauty is getting the photos back and having them turn out unexpectedly.
You can get super creative with the photos, adding props like crystals and prisms to play a bit more with light and how it refracts.
It’s the perfect way to remember your trip or even romanticise your day to day life.
We love getting out and finding inspiration in new places so having creative ways to capture that inspo is a big must. Hopefully you’ve found some new mediums that might work great for your next trip or even something you can add into your regular routine!
